7 Key 2024 Winter Coat Trends You’ll Be Seeing Everywhere

We know, we know—fashion is a tough sell when it’s frigid outside. But thanks to the most exciting winter coat trends of the season, you can still show off your taste while keeping the elements at bay. Fall and winter’s trends lean into utility and comfort: For example, scarf coats, which have been popular throughout 2024 (and will continue to be in 2025), offer built-in accessories that show off your personality and seal out wind and snow.

1. The barn jacket

Humble barn coats have gotten a major glow-up this season, with nearly every brand—Prada! Free People! Abercrombie!—trying its hand at the rural staple. They’re low-key but still cool, with contrasting collars for extra style points and as many pockets as you could want. There’s a color, weight, and material for every taste; Barbour and J.Crew lean classic, while Uniqlo and Everlane feel a little more contemporary. No matter which one you choose, though, it’ll look great with straight-leg jeans, tailored trousers, and full skirts.

2. The long topcoat

Long wool coats have never exactly gone out of style, but they’re especially in demand right now. Prada, Valentino, Miu Miu, and Carven, among many other labels, showed some variation of the classic silhouette for fall and winter—and you can get the same look from these further downmarket styles. Paired with jeans and loafers or a satin dress and slingbacks, they’re perfection. (Pro tip: If your coat has a vent at the tail, it’ll probably arrive sewn shut. Snip the thread before you wear it for the first time.)

3. The scarf coat

It’s been a few years since Toteme’s scarf jacket took over the world, and the design has reached peak visibility in 2024. The original features a built-in tasseled scarf, front slip pockets, loose sleeves, and contrasting stitching—and this year, everyone from Quince to Walmart offers a similar style. Modular scarves are also available on longer options at the likes of Gap and Banana Republic, keeping the relaxed, Nordic vibe going without being outright dupes. (Plus, given the popularity of cozy capes on the fall and winter runways, the longer picks are especially trendy.)

4. The plaid coat

A huge portion of the population (Glamour editors included) wants to look like denizens of the English countryside right now; just peep the checked outerwear at Chloé, Schiaparelli, and Rabanne, and you’ll understand the vibe. If solid-color coats just aren’t doing it for you, lean into heritage prints courtesy of Burberry, Zara, and Uniqlo—or lean into a more fantastical interpretation with Boden’s pink-and-navy plaid.

Puffers are essential this time of year, but they’re growing to outrageous new proportions for the season ahead. The ’80s are slowly but surely coming back into vogue—and these leather and faux leather bomber jackets are perhaps the easiest way to get into the trend. Bella Hadid and Sophie Turner are solidly on board, and Saint Laurent showed the layers for next spring, meaning they’re not going away anytime soon. Style these sporty, edgy standouts with faded denim, sequined skirts, or black leggings (plus oversized sunglasses) to channel the stylish decadence of the decade.

7. The faux fur layer

Basically every brand showed faux fur this season, proposing the luxurious—and cruelty-free—material as the perfect finishing touch to any cold-weather ensemble.
